NOISE DEMO AT HOME OF STACIE KUHLMAN, REGIONAL MANAGER FOR BNY MELLON BANK, PRIMARY FUNDER OF ELBIT, PRIMARY SUPPLIER OF ARMS ISRAEL IS USING TO COMMIT GENOCIDE

Posted on 2023/12/14 - 2024/06/05 by unsalted
Protestors hold a banner reading "Stacie Kuhlman Invests in Palestinian Death"

This reportback consists of three elements. First, a description of the action, and the reasons it was taken. Second, a description of how this action was made to happen, to inspire comrades across the country to act. Third, lessons learned from the action for comrades.

I.

From Jinx Press:

In Chicagoland last night, an autonomous group gathered outside the home of Stacie Kuhlman, Midwest Regional President of Wealth Management for BNY Mellon bank.

Activists disrupted dinnertime in Kuhlman’s otherwise quiet, wealthy neighborhood. Under the frosty glow of Christmas lights, they banged on pots and pans, sang, and chanted, ‘Stacie K, you can’t hide! You are funding genocide!’

Body bags representing the 15,000+ dead were tossed on Stacie Kuhlman’s lawn. Activists also distributed flyers to her neighbors. Some emerged from their homes to chat with LaGrange police officers.

One neighbor remarked to protesters, “She’s just doing what she’s told!”

“So were the Nazis!” they fired back.

BNY Mellon’s investment portfolios have directly funded Elbit Systems, Israel’s largest weapons supplier.

The arms manufacturer’s stock prices have surged since October 7. As noted by activists, BNY Mellon increased their shares in Elbit by 22% less than three weeks after the Israeli invasion of Gaza—increasing the wealth of Kuhlman’s managed investments in parallel with the senseless slaughter of Palestinians.

Activists around the globe continue to pressure Elbit and its subsidiaries with direct actions and blockades in an effort to halt ongoing bombing and encourage disinvestment.

Images and video from this action can be found, at the time of this submission, at https://www.instagram.com/p/C0hVJ_NxbGB/?img_index=1

To add to this: Stacie seemed pretty disrupted. She seemed to call the police, but the small-town police didn’t arrive until about 10-15 minutes after the group of comrades arrived, and once the police got there, they didn’t seem to know what to do. At peak, there were 6 squad cars. After about half an hour, Stacie seemed to have left the house via the back driveway, and people continued making noise and chanting for another half hour, then chanted marching up and down the street for a little while to alert the neighbors of Stacie’s crimes. ALF Liberates 30 Foxes From Ohio Fur Farm

Posted on 2023/11/26 - 2024/06/05 by unsalted
Exterior view of the large buildings of a fur farm.

On a chilly night last weekend, members of the ALF visited Grand River Fur Exchange in Rome, Ohio (6310 US Highway 6) and liberated 30 foxes being held captive there, destined for imminent slaughter so their skins could be sold for profit.

One thing we noticed about this particular farm, though at first glance it seemed moderately secure…..we didn’t even need bolt cutters. The wire encircling the pen where the foxes were held we were able to rip open with nothing but our hands. Once inside, the cage doors, held fast with a little bit of wire, were also able to be torn open with just a strong pull. It just goes to show that anyone, without requiring any special tools or know how, can visit a fur farm at night and save animals’ lives.

Most of the foxes were terrified of us, knowing humans come only to deliver abuse and death. But within minutes most of them had leapt from their cages, some escaping through the holes we had created in the enclosure. All of our efforts that night were repaid in an instant, seeing the foxes that had escaped into the outside world, knowing these were their first moments of a new and long life when minutes ago they had been condemned to death in mere weeks. No amount of chanting at street protests will give you anything close to the feeling of seeing animals you just freed get away. Continue reading “ALF Liberates 30 Foxes From Ohio Fur Farm” →

Chicago, IL: Military Recruiters’ Office Attacked in Memory of Jennifer Laude

We smashed out windows and knocked over furniture at a military recruiters’ office in a suburb of Chicago last night.

In solidarity with Filipino/a/x anarchists’ calls to commemorate Ganda, we swarmed on a miserable little strip mall where black and brown youth are targeted for induction into the imperial machine. Our intention was to slow down this violent routine, even if just for a couple of hours.

We swung our hammers invoking Jennifer Laude’s life, remembering the deeds of Michele Angiolillo and Leon Czolgosz, and channeling our rage against the transmisogyny and white impunity of neo-colonial occupation (A).

SEVERAL HUNDREDS OF MINK RELEASED FROM A FUR FARM

“a few nights ago we visited olsen fur farm (smieja) at w22875 state road 121 in independence wisconsin. it’s operational for now, but maybe releasing several hundred mink has a chance to close it for good. we hope many of the mink enjoy their freedom in the wild and that this farm will be unable to breed thousands upon thousands of them in future years. they have an opportunity now to cut their losses and leave the fur industry forever.

fur farms exist only for fashion and profit. though the industry has declined significantly in the past decade, hundreds of thousands of animals are bred and murdered for their fur every year. even if these minks lives in the wild are cut short by nature or human intervention, the farm would have undoubtedly slaughtered them all. there is real joy in bearing witness to these animals getting their first taste of freedom. we hope this action inspires others to take similar action for animals near them. with a little planning and a few cheap tools, you too can liberate hundreds of creatures in a few short hours. until all cages are empty, for humans and non human animals alike. free them ALL”

Two Valves Turned Closed on Enbridge’s Line 5

Posted on 2023/07/28 - 2023/07/28 by unsalted

Anonymous submission to Unsalted Counter Info.

Reportback from some valve turners:

It is with a heavy heart and hazy skies we announce that 2 different pipeline valves were turned off along the Line 5 route on Anishinaabae land in the great lakes region. This was done on the 13th anniversary of the Kalamazoo River oil spill. This was the 2nd largest inland oil spill in amerikkkan history, dumping 1,000,000 gallons of tar sands crude oil into the river and causing untold damage to the water, land and those who live on it.

Currently, Enbridge is preparing to construct a concrete tunnel beneath the waters of the so-called Great Lakes to house a dual pipeline system in order to increase flow rates and carry even more tar sands from the lands of the north to refineries in the south. The Straits tunnel project is meant to replace a 70 year old pipe that is hastily secured to the bottom of the lake bed, even free floating in some areas.

Enbridge claims that the tunnel is safe, but a tunnel project beneath the straits is a resource intensive project. The tar sands would continue to be extracted, desecrating the land in northern geographies. The refineries in the south still pumping out toxic fumes that pollute nearby Black neighborhoods. The camps of workers near both the straits and the Bad River reroute still disappearing Indigenous women and relatives. The companies that rely on Enbridge oil still operating in the towns and cities, underpaying workers and enacting anti-Black and anti-Indigenous violence in nearby communities. The tunnel itself, bored through the bedrock beneath the water, containing two high-volume pipelines transporting millions of barrels of oil monthly, operated by a company with a long history of environmental catastrophe.

It’s easy to turn a valve. Every 10 or so miles along the pipeline route there is a pump station. Some of these pump stations are larger than others, some containing more of Enbridge’s infrastructure like work trucks, electrical stations, dynamic machinery, communication systems, and field offices. For us, we found pump stations that simply contained a valve and a small brick structure that contains basic comms and electrical components. Many of these places are remote, with response times that vary from 20 minutes to over an hour. Pump stations often contain a high-definition camera with a motion sensor mounted looking directly at the valve. When the motion sensor is triggered, the structure becomes heavily illuminated by flood lights and begins recording. Nothing some spray paint cant fix! The structures are always surrounded by a fence and are positioned next to or on top of a service road. The pipeline route is easy to see from a satellite image, as it cuts a clear path through the forest. The valve itself sometimes has a nut that is fitted with a large wrench and turned clockwise until you hear a series of musical notes, indicating that the pressure in the pipe has changed. At some valves, there was actually a big red button that just said STOP, which stops flow immediately. For us, we found it incredibly inportant to call the emergency Enbridge number listed on the facility and tell them we were shutting off the valve. The engineer on the other side of the line sounded very panicked, and immediately shut off flow to the entirity of Line 5. We did this 5 minutes before actually turning the valve, to ensure that the shut down would happen safely, obviously oil spills aren’t something we want to happen as a result of our actions.

In order to protect the water, the land and all the relatives that live on it, companies like Enbridge must stop extractive projects like tar sands. They must stop the flow of oil, because all of our lives depend on it.

And if they don’t, we will

Transphobic Hair Salon in Traverse City Vandalized

The storefront of a salon whose owner made transphobic comments is vandalized with spraypaint reading "TC loves trans folks" on the door, and "Trans power" etched on the window.

Anonymous submission to Unsalted Counter Info.

The owner of Studio 8 Hair Lab, Christine Geiger, said that people who specify their pronouns should go to a pet groomer. She also said she didn’t care that she was in violation of MI HB 4744, a Michigan law banning gender discrimination. Well, trans people and their allies can break the law too, Christine, and we thought your store front could use some redecoration. Glass etch and spray paint reading “TC <3s trans folks” and “trans power” did just the trick. Trans people and our allies will not let this stand in our community.

here in so-called southeast Michigan, it was too freakin hot on the night of the 4th so we decided to take to the streets for mischief, and what did we find but a Chase Bank with plenty of good-sized windows and atms!
we decided to redecorate. we glued the ATMs shut and spray-painted the windows, and used acid-etch paint to write messages of resistance like DROP COP CITY and VIVA TORTUGUITA!
we think that your stupid bank looks MUCH better now. down with beige minimalism! up with the spirit of resistance!
it was the best fourth of july we’ve ever spent.

chase, if you don’t drop the Cop City project, we will rain down more destruction upon you and your buildings.

death to america!
death to banks everywhere!

So-called Ypsilanti, Michigan

To Mr. Beal:
Hey Stewie,
We slashed the tires on three of your fucking work trucks! They were just sitting there in the lot between Hamilton and Adams, looking all stab-able.
Housing should be free. No one wants to work dead-end, soul-crushing jobs just to turn over their earnings to you every month. All just to have a roof over our heads so we can have somewhere to rest before returning to our shit jobs? Nah.
We were meant for more fun and sexy things.
The tenants are tired of paying your mortgages for you while you refuse to make basic repairs on your shitty units. They’re tired of living in squalor while you reside comfortably in your remodeled home at 113 Buffalo St, Ypsilanti, MI (this action was successful despite cameras, so the 3 at your home should be no trouble).
Against all landlords!
The war is on, and there’s more of us than you.

To our friends:
While it’s not exactly our favorite holiday, did you know the chaos of the 4th of July makes good cover for all sorts of fun activities? The rocket’s red glare and bombs bursting in air provide good distraction for the FWOOSH of a depressurizing tire. Imagine the trouble we could cause if we started planning for next year now.

Anyhow, Beal has offices in Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Toledo also:

Drag Event Defended from Proud Boys in Portage, MI

Posted on 2023/05/28 - 2023/05/28 by unsalted
A single Proud Boy getting handcuffed by police in Portage, Michigan

Anonymous submission to Unsalted Counter Info.

This past Saturday proud boys attempted to harass an inclusive drag event hosted at a church in Portage, Michigan. A queer and anti-fascist rapid community response defended the event, outnumbering bigots and providing a strong physical deterrent to their presence.

My crew arrived around when the event was scheduled to start. One small circle of supporters was keeping watch of the quieter entrance to the parking lot to cheerfully greet attendees, while the bulk of the anti-fascist presence of about 50-75 people was at a larger entrance, watching the few proud boys across the street who arrived first and were waiting for other fellow bigots to arrive. The mood was cheerful but somewhat tense. There were free zines available, a speaker playing tunes, and overall the crowd was sociable while focused on defending the event and wider queer community. There were young people and adults, many people wearing some kind of black bloc, and others wearing typical street clothing. Immediate police presence was initially small, one marked squad SUV near the proud boys, one farther down the street, some presumed unmarked SUVs nearby, and more police farther away to serve as backup.

The proud boys hung by their car waiting for their friends in cringey bud light costumes to arrive, and finally started making their way towards the church without police escort. At this point there was approximately a dozen proud boys and affiliated bigots. The crowd of defenders started chanting in response to warn the proud boys to stay away, which unfortunately sparked some frustrating debate between a small number of liberals and the generally more militant crowd. The liberal concern and peace-policing over ‘instigating’ the anti-drag bigots would be a recurring theme over the afternoon. Whether they saw the verbal disagreements as confusion within the crowd or were simply self-confident, the proud boys approached the crowd, attempting to cross the street. At this point a scuffle broke out, with proud boys throwing the first punches, but being handily dealt with in return. The police responded quickly, but only had two or three officers immediately present and could only threaten antifascists with arrest. As police SUVs staged nearby arrived, there was quickly a dozen officers, and one of the proud boys was cuffed and taken away. No antifascists were detained or arrested, and some appeared to only suffer minor injuries. The police separated the crowds and primarily kept watch of the anti-fascists.

The quick scuffle was followed by a standoff on opposite sides of the road, with police in-between. Insults were exchanged for about an hour and a half until the proud boys eventually decided to leave. Probably because there wasn’t anything more they could do, and possibly because they had their fellow chud to bail out. As the immediate chud threat left, police also eventually left. Most defenders left after this, while some stayed back to watch for any possible returning proud boys, which didn’t happen.

Unfortunately one woman entered the event with malicious intentions, non-consensually filming children, parents, and drag performers to exploit for social media outrage fame later. This part of the event aftermath is currently playing out on social media.

Analysis

The rapid response worked fairly well for a short-notice event. In my opinion, this speaks to the strength of building ties and relationships within your own communities and with others in nearby towns and cities. These relationships enable this kind of quick action, where various affinity groups and crews can act autonomously, communicate with and support each other. It’s very handy having the gear and friends at the ready so you can quickly make a plan together, prepare support, and take collective action with people you trust.

In the case of defending an event at a fixed location such as this, controlling all entrances/exits is crucial. This was done well, with both entrances having a visible presence of supporters and defenders, with a large number of people committed to moving wherever the bigots may attempt to go to get closer. Planning to have radios or runners to call for backup if necessary is a good idea.

The police seemed mostly concerned with preventing fighting and keeping the road clear. It’s somewhat surprising they weren’t escorting proud boys initially, but they responded quickly when fighting did break out. The fact the only possible arrest was a proud boy indicates to me that they probably didn’t see arresting any anti-fascists involved in the fighting as possible due to the numbers, and may also show a “whoever throws the first punch” approach to blame. To avoid accountability, police had their badge numbers covered.

These proud boys seemed divided over interest in actually fighting versus trading insults, “triggering the libs” and live-streaming, spending most of the time shouting across police lines. They were significantly outnumbered and largely stuck together. Given the way this kind of standoff attracts attention, there was likely an opportunity for a sneakier normie-bloc crew to circle around and inspect the bigot’s vehicles, which were parked together in a known location.

The small number of liberals who sought to control the crowd (telling people to not chant, etc) were an amazingly oblivious distraction who seemed most concerned with a “peace” where bigots kept off the property and everyone stayed quiet. In the moment it seemed that this minor spectacle allowed or enticed proud boys to edge closer to the event. Debating love-based approaches to handling bigots is best done when not immediately physically defending a queer event from bigots who don’t tolerate queer existence. That said, for those willing to have the conversations, it may be worthwhile to try making inroads with said liberals. They may not ever be convinced that militant defense is correct, but they may at least be left with enough understanding and some notion of a relationship that they’ll keep out of the way in the heat of the moment.

The woman who filmed from within the event in an effort to catch her 15 minutes of fame in the right-wing outrage cycle is important to highlight. She seems to be 25 year old Olivia Claire Hickey, currently a grad student at Sam Houston State University.

https://twitter.com/antichud/status/1660333576691535872

(archived: https://archive.is/QBuEM)

Antifascists and those running or hosting drag and queer events should be aware of her to prevent her from doing the same kind of filming at other events. We need a proactive approach of keeping out known right-wing troublemakers, and probably want a strictly enforced no-photography policy, with possible exceptions for photographers who are known, trusted and invited to do event photography. This woman was unfortunately able to get footage of event-goers without their consent, to abuse for her own benefit.

What Next?

At this point it’s well established that the right is uniting around anti-LGBTQ hatred. It’s long been a feature of their politics, but has become a primary driver of action. While various GOP-controlled states compete to implement the cruelest eliminationist policy, far-right actors from proud boys to open nazis are making a point of threatening queer events on the ground. There’s indications within proud boy channels that they’ll make this a focus of their activity for the month of June, attempting to counter pride celebrations, pride in general, and even Juneteenth. It’s not hard to imagine other nazi and fascist groups doing the same.

However, the far-right’s echo chambers are fooling them. This kind of bigotry is far too popular, but less popular than they think. This gives us an opportunity. These calls to defend our community from hate groups can attract the numbers to solidly keep the bigots at bay or even run them off in the right circumstances. They’re a great opportunity to meet other like-minded people under circumstances of actually taking action to defend each other, and these experiences can also radicalize some of the liberal attendees. Defending ourselves from fascist attack doesn’t require justification, but these are nice bonuses.

These right-wing threats will become more common. Prepare for them now. Check in on your queer and radical networks, get a trusted crew together that you know well and can communicate well with, get gear ready (umbrellas, clothing, etc. 😉 ). Make plans for support, everything from jail support to snacks, rides and pet-sitting. Keep tabs on right-wing chatter, or get updates from people who do. Think about what these bigots are trying to get out of these escalations (rage-bait footage, IRL events, disrupting queer existence, …) and how to deny that to them, or make it cost more than they’re able to tolerate.
