This past Friday, after the administrative law judge made the announcement to uphold the DNR permits for the Wisconsin section of the proposed line 5 pipeline, a banner was hung on Highway 13 between Washburn and Bayfield Wisconsin. One side of the banner reads “Defend our great lake” and the other side says “All pipelines break”.
Enbridge is telling pipeline workers that they are planning on constructing the re-route pipeline this spring and summer. Enbridge has told the Ashland County sheriff’s office that it should anticipate having a full jail this summer in anticipation of protests against pipeline construction. This week, Ashland, Bayfield, Douglas, and Iron counties are discussing signing off on a cooperation agreement between the county sheriffs and Enbridge where Enbridge would reimburse the sheriffs for safeguarding Line 5 construction sites and related arrests. While clear cutting of the easement continues every day, even further construction of the Line 5 re-route around Mashkiiziibii is imminent. If you are making plans to stand in solidarity with Mashkiiziibii and the water, plan for this spring and summer.
