What’s Happening in Turkey — From an anti-Authoritarian Perspective

Background

The Republic of Turkey, which was founded on the genocide of the Armenians in the region with a nationalist and murderous leaven, has not changed much in the past century. For non-Muslims, Kurds, Alevis and women who did not hold the majority and power in their hands, the state and its successfully constructed society were always a source of oppression. But starting in 2002, as a consequence of Erdoğan’s dictatorship, oppression, poverty, violence and exploitation started to be felt also by the majority of the society. In 2013, after increasing bans and oppressions, millions of people stood up for their freedoms in the Gezi Park riot that took place in cities all over the country. The months-long resistance ended with unprecedented national-scale police attacks in which eight young people aged 15-22 were killed and thousands detained. Since 2014, the Turkish state has become a police state, and after the 2016 fictitious coup attempt, it has been ruled with absolute authoritarianism under the state of emergency. Since 2021, as a result of the economic crisis that has escalated with great momentum, 60% of the population now lives below the hunger line.

WHAT IS FLOCK?

Flock Safety is a mass surveillance start up based in Atlanta, Georgia that promises law enforcement and private business AI surveillance, license plate reading (LPR) technology, and real time alerts. Founded in 2017, the company now claims presence in 4,000 cities across 42 states. Flock LPRs compile unique identifying car information – License Plate, Make and Model, Color, Unique Alterations, and Frequency of Visits – then stores this data for 30 days. LPRs are leased to police, businesses, property managers or Home Owner Associations; these clients receive up to date hardware, maintenance and custom applications such as Hot List Alerts which allow them to track any vehicle(s) they desire in real-time. Flock boasts about its ability to identify a “vehicle fingerprint” which it claims includes color, make, model, bumper stickers, roof or bike racks, after market wheels, major scratches or dents, etc.

Standard Flock cameras cover 1.5 lanes of one-directional traffic up to a distance of 75 feet. They use a 16mm 1/2” lens with an IR filter, meaning the field of view is quite large but low-resolution. For night surveillance, they are outfitted with 6 LEDs that flash infrared light into the field of view. They use solar panels for power and an LTE modem for sending and receiving data.

Condemning Dana Nessel’s Hypocrisy

Posted on 2025/03/13 by unsalted
A line of UMPD officers in riot gear prepare to violently sweep the Palestine solidarity encampment at the University of Michigan

Originally published on https://whatsleftypsi.com/2025/condemning-dana-nessels-hypocrisy/

Michigan attorney general Dana Nessel, a self-styled progressive who has attempted to build a reputation opposing Donald Trump’s authoritarianism, now exposes her own hypocrisy by weaponizing the legal system to suppress pro-Palestine protesters. Her refusal to drop the politically motivated charges against students and activists at the University of Michigan—despite mass demands to Drop the Charges—reveals a glaring contradiction: She claims to fight tyranny while enabling it. Nessel’s actions align her not with the communities she purports to defend, but with the same carceral systems and imperial logic she once condemned.

Nessel’s prosecution of pro-Palestine dissent is a betrayal of the principles she claims to uphold. Where was this zeal for “accountability” when white supremacists plotted to kidnap Michigan’s governor? Where is her outrage over “israel’s” US-funded genocide in Gaza, which has slaughtered over 40,000 Palestinians? Her selective application of justice exposes a dangerous truth: For Nessel, opposing Trump is a political brand, not a commitment to dismantling oppression. When the victims of state violence are Palestinians and their allies, she sides with the powerful.

This zine is a love letter to anyone who finds themself hungry for the information contained in these pages, no matter the circumstances that lead to this booklet coming into your hands. This resource was diligently compiled and written with care by a few clinic workers in the midwest for the patients we can’t see anymore, in the wake of the US Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in June 2022.

In this zine, we’ll talk about the process of making a decision, getting ready, what to expect after taking the pills, taking care of your emotions, safety planning, and how to move forward after your abortion. It contains evidence-based recommendations and anecdotally-informed best practices for self-managing a medication abortion through the end of the 12th week of pregnancy. Throughout these pages, we’ll share some wisdom, care, and hot tips from our experiences. We hope you’ll find it informative, interactive, and comforting.

Ding Dong Ditch

Posted on 2025/01/29 - 2025/01/30 by unsalted

Fuck you, Alex Boyko. You are a rapist and we won’t forget what you’ve done. So we decided to pay your tattoo shop a vist. We spray painted your ring camera and took a hammer to it, glued your locks, and spray painted your store front so everyone knows what you did. And we rang the door bell haha you don’t deserve to sleep comfortably.

Alex Boyko is a serial rapist. He has sexually assaulted and harassed 200 people. Many are women and femmes who he was tattooing. He’s boasted about his assaults and he continues to run a tattoo shop at 28913 W. Seven Mile Road in Livonia. The courts will never give us justice but direct action is always at our fingertips. Cis men need to step up and make it a responsibility to deplatform rapists. Pay him a visit, cover your face so you’re not on camera, break his store, put him out of business. Ding dong, asshole, we’ll keep waking you up. You can’t hide from what you did.

#FreeCaseyNow: On Casey Goonan and the Abandonment of Political Prisoners in the Pro-Palestine Movement

Posted on 2025/01/01 - 2025/01/01 by unsalted
A noisy background with a newsprint image of a white man with a goatee, short shaved hair and glasses, who is presumably Casey Goonan. Text at the top reads "empty the prisons" and at the bottom "free casey goonan"

#FreeCaseyNow: On Casey Goonan and the Abandonment of Political Prisoners in the Pro-Palestine Movement

Casey Goonan is the only US political prisoner from the 2024 pro-Palestine student encampments. They are an abolitionist and anarchist who has dedicated themselves to multiple forms of prisoner support work and directly engaging with incarcerated comrades. The impact they’ve made inside is prevalent, as indicated by statements from their comrades Stevie Wilson and Hybachi Lemar. They’ve always pushed to ensure an understanding of Black struggle and revolt as central to their abolitionist work, and through understanding the totality of anti-Blackness the importance of an anti-police and anti-prison perspective was brought into any and all of their efforts towards liberation.

In June of 2024, they were arrested by a task force comprised of the FBI and other law enforcement agencies in connection with an alleged direct action which took place in solidarity with the UC Berkeley encampments which had been brutalized by police and zionists earlier in the year* . If convicted, they could face up to 20 years in prison with a minimum sentence of 5. The investigation and court proceedings are currently ongoing but a non cooperative plea deal is pending in which Casey will plea guilty to one charge to allow additional charges to be dropped. This plea deal does not include information or testimony against anyone else.

While Casey has received a great amount of support from decentralized community in New York, Chicago, California, and elsewhere, the pro-Palestine movement needs to be publicly and actively supporting them. Right now, their primary accomplices are those who personally know them, those who prioritize prisoner support, and fellow anarchists. Despite vague assertions of the interconnectedness of repression and struggles between the American policing and prison apparatuses to that of Israel, there has been little material manifestation from that understanding within the US pro-Palestine movement. Meanwhile, coordinated struggle between prisoners and outside militants has been a key point of success for Palestinian liberation.

Festivals of Resistance: A Call for Gatherings the Weekend Before Trump Takes Office

Posted on 2024/12/06 by unsalted

Along with others around the country, we invite you to join us in organizing festivals of resistance on the weekend of January 18, immediately before Donald Trump takes office. This is a crucial opportunity to engage in outreach, education, and action ahead of what it is sure to be a tumultuous time.

Once Trump takes power, it will only become more challenging to make connections with our neighbors, create the networks that we will need to face down his assaults, and share the skills we will need to survive his reign. Right now, we have a precious window of time in which to prepare. Let’s make the most of it. Continue reading “Festivals of Resistance: A Call for Gatherings the Weekend Before Trump Takes Office” →

UMPD Officer’s Home Redecorated

Posted on 2024/11/30 by unsalted
A blurry and indistinct individual with a smiling sunglasses emoji for a face is pictured in front of a garage door spray painted with the words "gaza=kosovo", "fuck 12" and "fuck dpss".

Last night, we visited the home of Milot Goci, a Lieutenant of UMPD. Twenty five years ago, Milot fled ethnic cleansing in Kosovo. Today, Milot is part of the machine that perpetuates the genocide in Gaza. He has overseen the brutalization and arrests of people protesting the University of Michigan’s funding of “israel” and the companies that are profiting from the blood of Palestinians.

We spray painted his garage with the words “GAZA = KOSOVO, FUCK12, FUCK DPSS” and broke a window of his house. We did this to remind those contributing to this genocide that so long as they continue doing so, they are not safe.

Fuck 12. Free Palestine

Evasions-Project Releases English Translation of “How to defend yourself during a police interrogation”

Posted on 2024/11/21 - 2024/11/21 by unsalted
Cover of the book "How to defend yourself during a police interrogation". A figure seated at a table, head in their hands, has two police officers pointing at them, interrogating them. The officers cast shadows on the wall behind them, two large ghosts evoking the "good cop, bad cop" trope.

An interrogation is not a harmonious exchange between two individuals. It’s a conflict.
And in this conflict, our ignorance is our strength. Ignorance of the meaning of police work, ignorance of the manipulative techniques used, ignorance of the legal framework and, last but not least, ignorance of our means of defence.
In response to this observation, this book is intended as a tool for self-defense against police interrogation practices of interrogation.
